Jo: This is Real English from BBC Learning English. I’m Jo.
Jean: And I’m Jean.
Jo: Today we’re going to look at words and phrases that you might not find in your English text book.
Jo: Today’s word is ‘butty’ – B.U.T.T.Y – butty.
Jean: Butty. Butty
Jo: Well, butty is an informal word meaning sandwich.
Jo: Yes. You could say ‘I had a cheese butty for lunch.’
Jean:
Jo: Absolutely.

A: Mum! I’m hungry!
B: Well, get yourself a butty or something.
A: What do you normally have for lunch in England?
B: I don’t have much time for lunch, so I usually just have a butty from the local shop.
Jo: Do you like butties?
Jo: Well, I love a butty sometimes. Chicken butties are my favourite.
Jean: Mm,
Jo: Some English people like chip butties. That’s a sandwich with fried potatoes inside.
Jean:
Jo: Yes, I know it sounds horrible but chip butties are great! It’s also worth mentioning that butty is more commonly used in the north of England than in the south. Anyway, let’s recap – butty – is an informal word for sandwich.
Well, that’s all we have time for.
