Teachers in growing numbers are beginning to realize that spelling problems in English are of importance to our daily language learning. Students also find difficulties in precise expression on papers. Meanwhile, there is general discussion on the above.

There are a lot of reasons responsible for it. On the one hand, the young men are misguided by the present spoken-English- centered illusion. In other words, they pay little attention to spelling or written training. On the other hand, people who merely focus on oral English may not realize that written English is a base for further language studies. And they should have known that to express ideas clearly, exactly and correctly is of great significance.

Judging from the evidence offered, we may safely draw the conclusion that the correct and exact spelling ought to be the primary concern in English teaching. Teachers are to play an important role in the above issue. To sum up, it is high time that we placed great emphasis on spelling and the groundwork for the language learning.

Nobody has failed to notice the fact that spelling errors have been on the rise among college students. It has become the focus of our attention and aroused concern from educational experts.

What might be responsible for the prevalence of spelling errors?

Among the most important reasons is too much attention to listening and speaking. Compared with the popular theory decades ago, now most teachers consider listening and speaking more important than reading and writing. Therefore, they spend little time learning to write. To make the matter worse, even in writing students are often influenced by spoken English. For example, instead of “you”, “u” characteristic of colloquial style is preferred by an increasing number of youngsters.

Wider use of computers also contributes to this phenomenon. It is known to all that as a double-edged sword technology has some negative effects. When writing with a computer, errors we make will be corrected automatically. This saves us lots of time memorizing how to spell the word exactly. Unfortunately, when having an exam, we are not allowed to use this newly-invented gadget. Pen and paper is the only choice. Consequently, mistakes are all left uncorrected unless teachers help us find them out.

Man is to err. But too many errors will exert bad influence on fluent communication. In order to reduce the number of errors in our writing, I am convinced that we are expected to attach more importance to student’s skill of writing. Luckily, some universities have taken effective measures to help students improve.
