Transport ministers from 21 countries gathered in Tokyo Thursday to discuss measures aimed at cutting carbon dioxide emissions in the transport sector.
During the two-day meeting, the International Civil Aviation Organization and the International Maritime Organization will give essential information on their plans to be formulated by the end of 2009 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in areas of air and maritime transportation.
In a speech at the opening of the gathering, Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso said that how to strike a balance between development in the transport sector and environmental conservation is one of the challenges that the world is faced with.
The participating countries should play an active role in maintaining sustainable development and stability worldwide, said Aso, in the presence of 21 ministers from such countries as Australia, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Russia and the United States.
