A Dutch man who made a hoax call warning of a plane hijack last year has been given a 12-month sentence of imprisonment, half of it suspended, Radio Netherlands reported Tuesday.www.hxen.net
The 38-year-old man phoned the emergency services on Aug. 26 last year, claiming al-Qaida was planning to hijack a Transavia jet plane at Rotterdam airport. The man was trying to stop his ex-girlfriend flying to Turkey for holiday with her new boyfriend.
The call sparked a terror alert at the airport and the plane was grounded on the runway for hours while police searched for weapons and explosives. None were found and the plane eventually took off. The 117 passengers and six crew had to wait on board while the search was carried out.
The Rotterdam court on Tuesday also ordered the hoax caller to pay 30 of the passengers 100 euros each.
Despite the sentence, the convicted man will soon be released because he has been in custody since August.
