SINGAPORE - Computer sales in Asia outside Japan rose 16 percent to 7.4 million units in the March quarter compared with the previous year, research showed.

Sales were slightly higher than expected, including in the key markets of Australia and India, International Data Corp. said in a statement.

Compared with the previous quarter, however, sales dipped 5.0 percent due to seasonal trends.

"The Asia Pacific region's personal computer market got off to a solid start in 2004," said IDC analyst Bryan Ma.

"The road to the upcoming year appears bright, as long as issues such as regional elections, China's WAPI encryption standard, and a destabilizing situation in Iraq do not get in the way."

China plans to implement a new WAPI standard on June 1, which would require all wireless imports to carry encryption technology produced only in China.

This has sparked concerns from major industry players, such as Intel, Texas Instruments and Broacom, that China is using unfair tactics to hinder competition.

In the first quarter of this year, China-based computer vendor Lenovo was the market leader with a 10.9 percent share of the market, closely followed by Hewlett Packard with 10.8 percent.

IBM was in third place with a 7.4 percent market share, followed by Dell with 7.3 percent to round up the top four.

Although in fourth place, Dell showed the sharpest year-on-year growth with a 51.5 rise in sales.
