Juventus, Real Madrid Win In Champions League

Pavel Nedved scored the winner as Juventus edged Bayern Munich 1-0 in the first meeting between the two storied clubs, maintaining its perfect record in the Champions League.

Michael Owen marked his first Real Madrid start with the winner in a 1-0 victory over Dynamo Kiev. And, in the night's most surprising result, Manchester United was held to a scoreless tie at Sparta Prague. In other results, Liverpool and Deportivo La Coruna played to a scoreless tie; Monaco defeated Olympiakos 2-1; Bayer Leverkusen won 3-1 over Roma; Ajax won 3-0 over Maccabi Tel Aviv, and Lyon defeated Fenerbahce 3-1. In Turin, the first meeting between clubs with a combined six European championship titles was a cautious affair. After more than an hour of mostly lackluster play, French defender Lilian Thuram launched a full-field pass that Zlatan Ibrahimovic headed toward Nedved. The Czech playmaker then performed a quick zig-zag and beat Bayern goalie Oliver Kahn with a perfectly angled shot for his second goal in three Champions League games this season. Real Madrid's win was a rare bright spot for the nine-time European champion, on its second coach of the season and languishing in the bottom half of the Spanish league in its worst-ever start to the season. Owen took a cross from Ronaldo to beat goalie Olexandr Shovkovskiy in the 35th minute. "We knew it would be a hard game. We were facing a very good team. But we played a great game and created a lot of chances," Madrid coach Mariano Garcia Remon said. Roma, led by a third different coach in its third Champions League match, fell to its third straight defeat. And it's only going to get worse for Roma - after it forfeited its match against Dynamo Kiev on Sept. 15 when a fan injured referee Anders Frisk, it has to play its next two home games behind closed doors.
