New research revealed last week that taller people are at an increased risk of cancer.

What other aspects of your health could be affected by your height?

  BLOOD CLOTS AND DVT

Men who are tall and obese have a greater risk of potentially fatal blood clots, according to a team of researchers at the University of Tromso in Norway.

The study found venous thrombo-embolism — a potentially fatal blood clot in the lung often triggered by a blood clot in the leg — was 2.57 times higher in men 6ft or over.

One theory is that blood must be pumped a longer distance in tall people, which may cause reduced flow in the legs and thereby raise the risk of clotting.

‘Taller people tend to have larger muscle mass and it may be that the speed of blood flowing into the muscle mass is therefore slower. This could lead to clots,’ says Aaron Sweeney, a consultant vascular surgeon at Lewisham Hospital.

Another possible connection is that taller people tend to weigh more — and increased weight, particularly in those who are obese, puts extra pressure on the legs and calves, and so reduces blood flow.
