A teenage Chinese swimmer was on Monday at the centre of the Olympic Games' first controversy over allegations of doping.

The extraordinary world-record performance by Ye Shiwen, 16, in Saturday's women's 400m individual medley final has raised eyebrows, with a leading swimming coach describing it as "disturbing".

Ye took more than a second off the world record and five seconds off her personal best, and completed the final 50m in a time faster than US swimmer Ryan Lochte in winning the men's equivalent race.

The International Olympic Committee, however, played down suggestions of doping. Arne Lundqvist, chairman of the IOC's medical commission, said there was no reason to doubt that her swim was genuine, but said he could not be sure that China had been thorough about testing its athletes.

"Should I have my suspicions, I keep them for myself… and take any action, if so, in order to find out whether something is wrong or not," he said after repeated questioning about Ye at a press conference.

"You ask me specifically about this particular swimming. I say no, I have not personally any reason other than to applaud what has happened, until I have further facts, if so."

John Leonard, head of the World Swimming Coaches Association, earlier told the Guardian newspaper that Ye's performance was "disturbing".

Stephanie Rice of Australia, the previous world record holder in the 400m individual medley and defending Olympic champion, described Ye's swim as "insanely fast". Rice finished sixth in the race.

Ye herself was quoted by the China News Service as saying: "My results come from hard work and training and I would never use any banned drugs."

Lundqvist was asked if Chinese swimmers had been pre-tested prior to the games as much as other competitors, and replied: "I simply don't know who has been pre-tested and not been pre-tested."

But he did say that a sudden improvement in an athlete's performance would create a risk for sport and may be a reason to target certain groups of athletes. "Of course should a sudden rise in performance occur in a particular person, we could regard that possibly as a reason to do it," he said.

Jonathan Harris, head of anti-doping for the London organising committee, said: "Enhancements in performance is something we focus on so we target those athletes."

China has a chequered history in swimming. After winning 12 of 16 women's titles at the 1994 world championships in Rome, seven swimmers failed drugs tests a month later. There were similar failed tests at the 1998 world championships in Perth, and China then maintained a much lower profile in swimming, only resurfacing as a leading nation at the Beijing games in 2008.
