It was a plot twist Marcela Del Sol, an accomplished writer, never saw coming – she would wake up in hospital following a car accident and have to share her body with seven other 'people' with their own very distinct personalities.

The 43-year-old mother-of-two was driving her car along a highway in Charlestown near Newcastle, in mid July, 2013, when it broke down - she moved to the side of the road and another car crashed into the back of her.

Both cars were written off, she suffered major whiplash and her dissociative personality disorder (also known as multiple personality disorder) was triggered - giving life to C, L, T, M, M/B and twins A and B.

Marcela told Daily Mail Australia she started getting symptoms in 'late 2013' realising something wasn't right when people started to call her by other names – names she now recognises as her alter egos.

'I couldn't remember doing a lot of things – for example I would be at work but not remember how I got there,' she said.

'I was dismissed from my job but don't know how or why that happened.

'Then after that I started finding men's clothes in my wardrobe which just didn't make sense to me.'

Marcela's personalities work to protect her – and her children – from harm, and developed after a series of traumatic experiences including sexual assault and being held at knife point – all which occurred since moving to Australia from Chile 22 years ago.

She is the 'host vessel' – and said she now loves all of the personalities for different reasons.

She described the personalities in detail and said they range from 28-years-old to 'older than Marcela' and are both male and female.

Some even appear to function without the physical constraints Marcela is used to - and have 2020 vision, no need for contacts or glasses.

She has gotten to know them through email, post-it notes and photographs each of them take on her phone.

L – is the first personality described by Marcela.

'She is so sophisticated and vivacious, she is a real go getter.

'She's sexy and flamboyant – I just love her she is so out there.'

The next personality, C, has had a lot of conflict with 'L' 'because they are extremely opposite'.

He is also two years older than Marcela.

'C is a he – and he is a chauvinistic, conventional, strong male. He is the protector of the system.

'He can be antagonistic about who I am and who the others are.

'He has scared me in the past but I understand he is just trying to protect me.'

The next personality is A&B they are interchangeable female twins who love to wear flowers in their hair – and have been co-existing with Marcela recently.

Standing in the background so she knows they are there without taking over completely.

'They are the spiritual, nurturing, tender side of us. They help us with our humanitarian work.

'They love children, are cheerful and creative.'

The next personality is another male called M.

'He is always so cheerful and supportive. He is an encouraging guy who makes us all laugh.

'He is like the best friend and an ideal guy – and very good looking.'

A woman Marcela has called T is a lot older than she.

'She doesn't come out very often and when she does we are going to be in a very bad mental state and be very depressed.

'T is the dark side and holds on to all of our emotions and the difficulty of past trauma.'

The final alter ego is M/B a woman the others including Marcela 'don't know much about'.

She has only ever told her psychologist about this woman before revealing her to Daily Mail Australia as a 'stranger' who doesn't appear very often.

Marcela's book, 'Kaleidoscope' was mostly written by herself however some of her other personalities also pitched in.

'It isn't something that was scheduled or that we could plan but it did happen,' she said.

'Some of the chapters are significantly different.'

She wants to help promote the people behind mental illness and prove you can still be successful.

She also points out she has learnt over the year that communication is key when dealing with her disorder - though she realises other people may have to deal with theirs differently.
