When hospital staff are in full scrubs, their faces are almost completely obscured by their caps and face masks, with their eyes and eyebrows suspended between the two.

“The #TheatreCapChallenge is an initiative from the PatientSafe Network in response to concerns about how easily avoidable mistakes and poor communication are contributing to rising adverse events for our patients. ”

PatientSafe Network称,这一做法是为了让病患感觉到医生的人情味(to let everyone know we're human):

We need to nurture a culture which allows us to redesign our healthcare institutions. We need to develop systems which reduce mistakes and minimise them from causing harm when they inevitably occur. For this to happen, we need to let everyone know we're human.

“I went to a cardiac arrest in a theatre where there were about 20 people in the room,” Dr. Rob Hackett said. “I struggled to even ask to be passed some gloves because the person I was pointing to thought I was pointing to the person behind them.”

cardiac ['kɑː(r)diæk] n.
theatre n.

Dr. Hackett said the campaign has been met with some pushback. Usually, by the senior hospital staff. The anaesthetist thought this was a symptom of inertia in the health system towards change.

inertia [ɪ'nɝʃə] n.

At first, his colleagues didn’t take it seriously. “There were some snide remarks, like ‘can't you remember your name?'” Dr. Hackett said.

It has been adopted around the world with studies from the US and UK demonstrating how this simple idea can decrease human errors in healthcare.

"When you work across four or five hospitals and with hundreds of people, I'd say 75 per cent of staff I walk past I don't know their name. It's quite awkward."

Other theatre staff told Dr Hackett of incidents where medical students had been mistaken for surgery registrars and asked to complete procedures.

(President of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists)大卫•斯科特教授(Professor David Scott)说,

Any move that would improve coordination among operating room teams was worth doing among other strategies including clear and bold name badges on scrubs.

Under the hashtag #TheatreCapChallenge, they argue that having their names on them can save vital seconds in life and death situations.

From the patient's perspective, when everyone appears the same it is extremely difficult and unsettling to discern who is who.

When it comes to patients, women who are having cesarean sections, in particular, might benefit from the reassurance of knowing the names and positions of every staff member around them.

A 20-theatre hospital will discard over 100,000 disposable caps every year. The caps are made from viscose—a substance whose production is particularly harmful to the environment.

discard [dɪ'skɑːd] v.
viscose ['vɪskəʊz; -kəʊs] n.
