A health bill calling for a smoking ban to be placed on all public transportation has been submitted to the Chinese central government for consideration.
Smoking in the enclosed space or waiting area of public transportation, including airplanes, buses, taxis and trains will be strictly prohibited.
Opinion polls conducted by the China Youth Daily indicate that a majority of people favour a smoking ban. Supporters of a ban say that evidence concerning the risks of passive smoking are too compelling to ignore. The public have a right to protect themselves from smoke inhalation.
Sceptics feel that China's large smoking population will pose a great hindrance in the enforcement of such a ban. The ban will involve rigorous implementation and enforcement efforts, not to mention costly price tag. |
