Visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived in Canberra Tuesday afternoon to continue his state visit to Australia. There, he had a meeting with Australia's Governor General, Michael Jeffery. The two sides exchanged views on bilateral ties as well as international issues of common concern. CRI's Australian correspondent Chen Feng has more details.
Reporter: Australia's Governor General, Michael Jeffery, hosted a grand welcoming ceremony at the airport to greet the Chinese leader. Hu Jintao inspected the host's guard of honor at the 21-gun-salute welcoming ceremony.
On Tuesday evening, President Hu Jintao had a meeting with Michael Jeffery. President Hu Jintao says China is confident of the future of bilateral ties between the two countries.
Hu Jintao says, over the years, with common effort from both sides, Sino-Australian ties have kept good development momentum. Sino-Australian ties are setting a good example for the cooperation between countries with different social systems.
The Chinese President says, the development of Sino-Australian ties has a solid political foundation and also huge potential. It's in line with the long-term and strategic interests for both sides to further deepen all-round cooperation. China is willing, together with Australia, to strengthen dialogue, enhance mutual-trust, and push bilateral ties to a new level.
Michael Jeffery welcomed the visit of President Hu Jintao on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic ties. He says the frequent visits between the leaders of the two countries have greatly enhanced the development of the bilateral ties. Two sides are developing fast in bilateral trade, energy cooperation and educational exchange. The two countries both stand for world peace and are against war, while maintaining close coordination in internal affairs. He hopes the two sides will strengthen research and cooperation in the development of clean energy and dry land agriculture.
Hu Jintao arrived in Canberra after wrapping up a visit to Perth, Western Australia, where he met the Western Australian premier Alan Carpenter.
In Perth, the Chinese President also paid a visit to two laboratories in the Science and Technology Park in Perth, one of which has technical exchanges with the Jinchuan Group, the largest producer of nickel, cobalt and platinum in China.
Besides the science park, Hu Jintao inspected a melting reduction iron-making project sponsored under the joint investments made in 2002 by Australia, China, the United States and Japan. The Chinese president observed the iron-making process in a workshop.
President Hu Jintao will fly to Sydney on Wednesday, where he will hold talks with Australian Prime Minister John Howard, and will attend the 15th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum later this weekend.
