Sun Tiantian, the mixed doubles winner at the just concluded Australian Open, arrived in Beijing Monday night. She is the only Chinese tennis player who has won both the Olympic Games and a Grand Slam event. Her coach and fans gave her a warm welcome at the Beijing International Airport.
Sun Tiantian said she had been longing for the championship in a Grand Slam event for quite some time.
"Ever since I took the gold medal in Athens 4 years ago, I've been hoping for a miracle in the Grand Slam events. I'm very happy that I won the mixed doubles at the Australian Open and realized my dream of becoming a Grand Slam champion."
Deputy director of China Tennis Administration Center Gao Shenyang said Sun Tiantian's Australian Open title is of great significance.
"It is not only valuable to herself, but also to the Chinese Women's Tennis team as a whole. Everyone feels inspired and hopefully we'll have a fantastic season ahead." |
