CRI听力:Spring Festival Here and Abroad
We're now well into the Spring Festival holiday. We hope you’re enjoying your time, and are making the best out of it so far. This time of year, of course, is a traditional time for Chinese families to reunite and spend time with one another. But some people believe this may be changing. As this society develops and grows, some are suggesting that China is beginning to forget about some of its important traditions. So is that the case? And how do the Chinese living outside the mainland celebrate Spring festival?
Ni hao, you’re listening to People In the Know, your window into the world around you, online at here on China Radio International. In this edition of the show, we’re talking about the traditional values of the Spring Festival. So let’s get started.
(Music)
First, we’ll analyze the traditions of the Spring Festival and the changes to it. We’re joined on the line by Professor Zhang Quanli with Zhejiang Wanli University in Ningbo.
(Dialogue with Zhang)
And after a short break, we’ll head outside China to find out how the Chinese abroad celebrate their Spring Festival.

Ni hao, you’re listening to People In the Know, your window into the world around you, online at here on China Radio International. I’m Paul James in Beijing. In this, our 3rd in our Spring Festival series on culture, we’re talking about the culture of Spring Festival itself. For some insight into how this holiday is celebrated by overseas Chinese, we’re joined on the line from Singapore by Ms. Pang Chenglian, honorary Secretary of the Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations.
(Dialogue with Pang)
And that puts the wraps on this edition of People In the Know, online at here on China Radio International. As an outsider looking in, I can honestly say that the Chinese culture is one of the most unique in the world. As such, as it evolves, I think it’s important that China not forget about its past. Questions or comments for us can be sent to crieng@crifm.com. For Executive Director Wang Lei and Producers Yang Jingjie and Xu Yang, I’m Paul James in Beijing. We’ll be back with you on Monday.
