"A female companion is wanted for Valentine's Day: 20 yuan or roughly 3 U.S. dollars per hour for a movie, two yuan for a hug and five yuan for a kiss."
This post appeared on a city bulletin board system on Valentine's Day, attracting loads of messages, East Asia Economy and Trade News reports. The city is none other than Chang Chun, the capital of northeastern China's Jilin Province.
The paper quotes the student as saying he felt bad when he saw couples out together, and that he definitely did not want to spend another Valentine's Day without a girlfriend.
Astonishingly, most Internet users did not consider the student's antics too outrageous, the paper adds. Two other students also expressed the same idea, saying "Nothing is impossible these days."
Many critics of the post argue that the very idea of renting love makes love impure . The paper quotes one message as saying life is colorful if spent with your special someone, but renting a person is simply weird.
An expert at a psychiatric hospital in Changchun says the student's behavior may be a result of the loneliness coming from modern urban life. She adds that the issue may lead to sex-related services, which run counter to the moral meaning of Valentine's Day.
