CRI听力:China Issues Human Rights Record of the United States in 2007
China has issued an annual report on the human rights record in the United States in 2007. The report lists cases of human rights violations by the United States both in the U.S. and in other countries. CRI's reporter Wu Peng has the details.
Reporter:
China's State Council's Information Office released the report on Wednesdasy. It is a response to the Country Reports on Human Rights Practices for 2007 issued by the U.S. State Department.
The report says the United States reigns over other countries making arrogant and malicious attacks on their human rights records, but ignores its own human rights problems.(wWw.hxen.net)
Dong Yunhu is the secretary-general for the Chinese Human Rights Research Society.
"One is to provide a window to the world through which people can observe the human rights situation in the US. The other is to provide the US government a mirror, in which, we hope, it can look at itself. We advise the US to face up to its own problems, to improve its human rights and to clean house first before it condemns others."
The report reviews American human rights record for 2007 from seven perspectives. It says the increase in violent crimes in the U.S. poses a serious threat to the people's life, liberty and personal security.
It states that U.S. law enforcement and judicial departments have abused their powers and seriously violated the freedom and rights of its citizens.
Moreover, it says US troops engaged in frequent abuse of prisoners in the country's worldwide jails. In addition, racial discrimination is a deeply rooted social illness in the country.
Dong Yunhu says the 2007 United States Human Rights Record can help the rest of the world understand the real human rights situation in the US.
"China's report on the human rights record of the US is based on concrete evidence. It is based on materials published by the international media, organizations and the US government."
The document says America's human rights record can be best described as tattered and shocking. The facts listed in the report are only the tip of the iceberg. (www.hXen.com)
The report says it is time for the U.S. government to face its own human rights problems with courage and to improve its own human rights record.
It urges the US government to give up the unwise practice of applying a double standard to the human rights issues and using the standard to suppress other countries.
This is the ninth consecutive year China has issued a U.S. record in answer to the U.S. State Department annual report.
