2008-04-10来源:和谐英语

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd arrived in Beijing early Wednesday to start his four-day visit to China. It is Rudd's first state visit to China after his inauguration in December.

During a speech at the elite Peking University, Rudd reiterated his stance and argued against boycotting the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

"Some have called for a boycott of the Beijing Olympics because of the recent problems in Tibet. As I said in London on Sunday, I do not agree."(www.hXen.com)

Rudd said as a friend of China, he intended to speak directly on the issue when he met with Chinese officials.

"We recognize the need for all parties to avoid violence and find a solution through dialogue."

Rudd has been studying Mandarin since his university days at the Australian National University in Canberra, and he delivered his entire speech in Mandarin.

Peking University student Chang Meng said she was very impressed with Rudd's language skills.

"Really, I have to say that his Chinese is very good in all respects! Because it is so rare to find foreign leaders who can use the Chinese tones well and speak so clearly."

Rou Kai, another impressed student, offered his take on the reason why more and more foreign leaders are taking an interest in Chinese.

"I think it is because of the recent growth in the Chinese economy. It is only when you grow a strong economy that your political presence starts to have weight."
