CRI听力:Australia to Deep Bilateral Cooperation with China on Climate Change
Australian Minister of Climate Change and Water Penny Wong says that Australia will deepen bilateral cooperation with China on climate change as she joins Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's China tour. Our reporter Liu Yan has the story.
Reporter:
In an interview with CRI on Thursday, Penny Wong said that Australia is willing to work with China on international negotiations arising from the Bali Roadmap.
"We as a government see climate change mainly caused by greenhouse gas emissions, and the challenge for the future, we want to deepen our relationship and engagement with China on these issues. We can provide any assistance and technological cooperation we're able to as China finds its own path for sustainable development."
As China is Australia's largest trading partner and Australia is the ninth largest for China, Wong said the close trading partnership will benefit bilateral cooperation on climate change.
"There's a natural trade relationship there. We're one of the world's largest exporters of coal, and you're the largest consumer. So the prime minister made the point, if coal is the major challenge of climate change, we have to find technologies which reduce carbon dioxide. And China and Australia are in a unique position to work together on that, as we have a clear joint interest. We have a strong economic and trade relationship, and we want to build on that and expand it to engage on climate change. "(www.hxen.net)
Wong stressed that the two countries will share common but divergent responsibilities in the cooperation.
"Different nations in different times in their history have different contributions to make. From Australia's perspective, we are committed to reduction targets."
In addition, she praised China's effort on climate change and air quality. She said based on what the two countries have already achieved together, both sides will surely continue to explore different ways to collaborate in the future.
