CRI听力:Zhou Xun Appointed as UNDP Goodwill Ambassador
The United Nations Development Program appointed Chinese actress Zhou Xun as the first Chinese goodwill ambassador yesterday. Meanwhile, UNDP also launched a multimedia awareness campaign called Our Part in Beijing, advocating simple lifestyle changes to combat climate change.
Now our reporter Lu chen takes a closer look.
Reporter:
"I would like to thank you, Zhou Xun, for helping us in our mission to tackle climate change. We are proud to have you as the newest member of the UN family."
This is the president of United Nations Development Program, Khalid Malik announcing Zhou Xun's appointment as a UNDP Goodwill ambassador. Zhou Xun will spend time visiting UNDP climate change project sites this year, and participate in some of its performances. She considers this appointment as an honor.
"I think this is a very meaningful task and I'm very happy that I can do it. Malik told me that everyone has the right to enjoy the blue sky and clean water, but some of them give up the right. I was deeply touched and decided to do something to help."(wWw.hxen.net)
The newly-launched multi-media program Our Part aims to leverage Zhou Xun's celebrity influence to motivate individuals to adopt more simple lifestyle habits and fight against climate change. Zhou Xun gives an example.
"In the shooting crew, I suggested my workmates use reusable chopsticks and lunch boxes. You know, every crew has as least 20 members, and each member might use 3 pairs of disposable chopsticks a day. If they switch to reusable ones, it would save lots of energy."
Meanwhile, using more efficient light bulbs and reusing towels in hotels are also highly recommended. Malik calls upon all people to take part in the program.
"Many people feel climate change may just be tackled by the government and big industries. But the reality is we all can do something about it. It is more easily and less costly than many people imagined."
Malik attaches great importance to the program, for climate change has become a more and more serious problem facing the entire planet.(www.hxen.net)
"Climate change has become a defining issue of our time, set to transform the way we live and the way our economy is structured. In the next 5 or 10 years, this climate change will force us to make adjustment. We have heard the warnings."
To support the campaign, IT Company Sohu hosted an online competition, calling on the public to submit innovative logos. Within a month, over 80 ideas were submitted and the final selected one was a very simple one. It looks like a tree growing on a big drop of water. Zhou Xun explains why they chose this logo.
"The tree stands for hope. The water drop represents the origin of life. It also means that if we want to protect the environment, we should start from the small things."
