CRI听力:Heavy Rainfalls Trigger Floods in East China
Severe flood has swept through China's eastern provinces along the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, the worst since 1991.
Torrential rains have pushed the Yangtze River and its tributaries to dangerously high levels. In Anhui province, more than 200 millimeters of average rainfall was reported in general, while in some areas, precipitation hit record-breaking 573 millimeters. Vast areas of farmland are now under water, many residential areas are also seriously affected.(www.hXen.com)
Some of the levees along the river withstood the trial while others ruptured. Local governments mobilized experts and civilians to peform emergency rescue and disaster relief work.
Fu Wei, an in the flood stricken area, describes the flood control efforts being made by the local governments.
"The flood moved in suddenly, causing many dangerous surges. We have taken effective measures for flood control and fighting the flood. Someone moved stones to fill the levees and someone else pitched stakes."
