Just before Wen Jiabao's visit to the UN headquarters, Chinese vice foreign minister He Yafei has special expectations for the premier's attendance at these two UN meetings.
"We hope Premier Wen's attendance at the two UN meetings can fully demonstrate China's firm support to implementing multilateralism and the work of the UN. We also hope his visit can demonstrate China's willingness and determination to implement the millennium development goals. Moreover, we hope the visit can show China's persistent endeavors to build lasting peace and common prosperity in the world."
In Thursday's meeting at the UN, Premier Wen Jiabao will introduce what China has done in its commitment to meeting the millennium development goals.
Wen Jiabao will also elaborate on China's domestic and diplomatic policies and reiterate the country's stance on peaceful development at the 63rd general assembly's general debate.
Focusing on the millennium development goals, the two UN meetings will see leaders from nearly 140 countries attend.
Among the attendees, China is the first to have met the goal of halving the number of poor people ahead of schedule. Over the last 17 years, China contributed over 70 percent to the total global number of people lifted out of poverty.
In addition, China has maintained an adequate supply of grain to its domestic market, which has been a great contribution to the world's food security.
Although still a developing country, China has consistently provided aid to other developing counties to help them realize the Millennium Development Goals. So far more than 120 countries have benefited from such aid. Moreover, China has also written off debts for 49 impoverished countries.
Gao Yuanyuan is an official from the Department of Aid to Foreign Countries under the Ministry of Commerce.
"China's aid to foreign countries is based on the principle of respecting the recipients' needs and will. Our aid aims to improve the recipients' capability to develop by themselves."
The official reveals that China has decided to give zero-tariff status to 42 least developed countries which have diplomatic ties with China.
And the UN headquarter, Premier Wen Jiabao will introduce China's aid programs to more developing countries to help them realize their millennium goals.
