2008-10-04来源:和谐英语

China's new ambassador to the United Nations says China hopes to play a coordinating role in dealing with burning issues around the globe.

Ambassador Zhang Yesui assumed the rotating presidency of the U.N. Security Council for October.

He held a press conference on Friday, outlining the Council's agenda for the month.

When asked how concerned China is regarding North Korea's announcement to start re-building their nuclear program, Ambassador Zhang responded that diplomacy is the best option in handling the situation.

"The six-party talks constitute a very effective mechanism. As the chairman of the talks, China has done a lot of work to promote the de-nuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula. As the talks are currently facing some difficulty, I am confident that China will continue to play a positive and constructive role. I believe that in this regard efforts are going on in the capitals of the six countries."

On the issue of Afghanistan, Ambassador Zhang said that on the 14th of October, the Security Council will hear a briefing on the latest situation there and will hold a debate.(Www.hXen.com)

"As a neighbor of Afghanistan, China is watching closely the development of the situation in Afghanistan. We support the international community in putting in more resources to help Afghanistan expedite its armed forces and police construction, to realize its economic development and to restore national security and stability."

Ambassador Zhang Yesui has replaced the country's former envoy Wang Guangya, who was appointed a vice foreign minister in Beijing.
