CRI听力:Worker s Daily: The Indoor Beach, A Waste of Water?
It is reported that the Tianjin municipal government will officially allow the construction of a 30-billion-yuan amusement park, to begin in March of this year. The public was irritated by the news that the park would include an indoor sand beach, which will be the largest of its kind in the world.(www.hxen.net)
The 'Workers Daily' carries a commentary claiming that there is no problem with a government looking to improve urban landscapes and building highlights for the city, but the problem lies with the amount of money that the government has sanctioned for the recreational project at a time when the country is reeling from the financial crisis.
The author further points out that the indoor beach, a large water-consuming project, goes against the spirit of fighting the severe drought experienced by many Chinese provinces this year. And that the Tianjin municipal government, situated in a region severely short of rainfall, should be more aware of the need to save water.
Finally the author suggests that the city planners and managers should regard the needs of the people and invest the huge amount of money in education, medical services or social security, rather than large projects which ostensibly showcase their achievement.
