Darwin's great great grand-daughter, Sarah Darwin, was there to witness the event.
She said if Darwin were alive today, he would be deeply concerned about climate change.
"It's good timing I think and I'm sure if Charles Darwin were alive he'd be doing a lot for conservation today and he'd be concerned about global issues like climate change."
Darwin formulated his ground breaking theory of evolution by natural selection - which included the famous idea of "the survival of the fittest" - after visiting the Galapagos Islands.
