CRI听力:Public Should be the First to Know of Food & Product Safety Incidents
An American consumer group has filed charges against cosmetics giant Johnson & Johnson. It alleged that chemicals found in some of its baby-bath products could cause cancer.
An article in the Beijing-based People's Daily says this has caused great panic among Chinese consumers.
Many of them immediately stopped buying the American company's products and anxiously await the results of the Chinese Health authorities' quality checks on them.
Only recently did the Shanghai quality watch dog decide to put Johnson & Johnson's products through safety checking. But it still didn't specify when the testing results would be available.
The article says the delay has kept the public in a state of worry. They don't know whether the baby-bath products have actually caused harm to their children's health. (www.hxen.net)
The writer says health authorities are obligated to make the public among the first to know when such incidents occur.
The article suggests that safety watchdogs should also publish helpful suggestions or tips on quality safety, such as chemical additives and trace levels considered safe in some daily commodities.
This would help to ease consumer anxiety in the wake of such incidents, the article says.
