CRI听力:Reactions Towards Obama's Video Message from Iran

2009-03-22来源:和谐英语

Iran has played down the US President Barack Obama's new video message to the Iranian people, saying it welcomed the overtures but warned that decades of mistrust can't easily be erased.

Obama released the video to coincide with the major Iranian festival of Nowruz, a 12-day holiday that marks the arrival of spring and the beginning of the new year in Iran.

But Iran's leaders did not make any reference to the video message on Friday during televised New Year messages.(www.hXen.com)

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said the year was full of achievement and honour for the Iranian nation, and said the world powers had reached a "total dead-end" in their policies.

"The inefficiency of the international organisations was revealed and the world powers have reached a total dead-end. Dead-end of theory, management and performance."

It wasn't clear how many Iranians were able to see Obama's video message, which was not aired on state television in Iran.

A number of Tehran residents gave mixed reactions after watching the message from Obama administration.

One described it as "a great move" after long-term strained relations.

"It is interesting that Obama has made such comments about Iran. It was a great move by a president after this long term of strained relations between the two countries."

While some others felt problems between the two countries "cannot be easily settled."

Obama has repeatedly signalled a willingness to engage with Iran about its nuclear programme and hostility toward Israel, a key US ally.

But his Iranian counterpart Ahmadinejad has said Iran would welcome talks with the US - but only if there was mutual respect.
