CRI听力:WMO Appeals for Coordinated Efforts in Global Disaster Pre-warning System
World Meteorological Organization says it hopes to make coordinated efforts with the international community to jointly facilitate global disaster pre-warning system.
WMO spokeswoman Gaelle Sevenier made the appeal in Geneva.
"The natural disasters are unavoidable, but pre-warning is the best method to eliminate casualties and other economic losses. In the latest half century, the death toll has shrunk to 220,000 from 1996 to 2005 compared with the number of 2.66 million from1956 to 1965, regardless of increasing natural disasters."(www.hXen.com)
Sevenier said the WMO attributed it to the continuous perfection of worldwide disaster alerting system.
She also unveiled the new target of the WMO in the next decade, trying to halve the casualty number from the one from 1994 to 2003.
WMO is also committed to building up and bettering the natural disaster pre-warning system with World Health Organization, particularly focusing on extreme weathers, including dust storms and forestry fire.
