Anchor: Friday marks the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. Chinese people have been mobilized to carry out a civil anti-drugs campaign. Tu Yun reports.

On Friday China's Minister of Public Security, Meng Jianzhu, visited a drug addiction treatment centre in Beijing.

It features forced intervention programs that help people quit their addictions.

"You must have confidence, determination and be strong. You can make it as long as you abstain through the treatment."

China has so far established nearly 180 such centres, treating almost 110 thousand addicts.
Since 2005, China has carried out a nationwide anti-drugs campaign.

As an increasing number of young people are becoming involved in drugs in China, insiders say it's crucial to have the whole society, especially influential people, participating in the campaign.

Yang Fengrui is Executive Deputy Director of the Narcotics Control Commission Office.

"Some 100 thousand volunteers have joined us in the mission. With the participation of people from all aspects of society, celebrities and public figures in particular, we may achieve more social effects."

Internationally renowned kung fu star Jackie Chan has just been appointed ambassador of the mission.

"I've been promoting this campaign against drug abuse. Now that I'm appointed anti-drug ambassador, I feel more obligated to do all I can to help, especially young people, stay away from drugs."

Customs officials in China have discovered nearly 200 drug crime cases so far this year. They've also reported nearly 300 suspected traffickers.

Meanwhile, courts around the country handled over 14,000 drug-related cases between January and May. That's a 12 percent increase on the same period last year.
