Wu hongbo says with more exchanges between the heads of the two countries, Sino-Germany relations have been consolidated.
"Generally speaking, it never happened before that top officials in two countries have had such frequent exchanges, and two nations have so much mutual benefits. We can say that Sino-Germany relations achieved progress after several generations' efforts and this progress ensures a solid foundation for future development."
In spite of the positive backdrop of bilateral relations, dissenting voices can still be heard. In September, 2007, top leader in Germany met with the ** Lama, a Tibetan separatist, despite China's objection.
Wu says the two countries have different social systems, ideologies and economic performance. In this way, both sides should solve disputes by seeking common ground while putting aside differences.
"Both sides should respect each other, conduct no interference into other's internal affairs and solve conflicts through dialogue. Only when we stick to this principle can relations move forward."
Wu says Germany will have its Federal Parliament elections in September. He will pay close attention to Germany's policies on China.
Meanwhile, he will take specific measures to promote bilateral relations during his term.
"First and foremost, we should promote understanding of both sides, second, establish bilateral trade relationships based on mutual benefits. China and Germany should join hands to fight against protectionism during the global financial crisis; moreover, we plan to strengthen people-to-people exchanges and strengthen cooperation to tackle with global issues."(www.hXen.com)
Wu adds that 1.3 billion Chinese people are Germany's friend and hopes the two nations can make efforts to create a more harmonious world.
Wu began his diplomatic career in 1976 and was appointed assistant foreign minister in 2007.
During the 1990s, career diplomat Wu worked at the Sino-British Joint Liaison Group which was set up to ensure the smooth transfer of government in Hong Kong in 1997.
