Wu Mian is in charge of the Public Transportation Security from the Beijing Public Security Bureau. He says police officers will also be assigned to the city's major bus lines to ensure travel safety in Beijing.

"We have made plans in response to different kinds of situations. For instance, in case of an emergency such as the bus burning earlier in Chengdu, police on the bus will help evacuate passengers according to plans; or make immediate decisions to minimize losses."

Wu Mian says patrol officers will work with undercover cops to handle emergency situations on buses and crack down on pick-pocketing and purse-snatching. They also have the power to check passengers' belongings if they detect something suspicious.

Public security expert Wang Dawei says it is very important to reinforce public security measures ahead of special occasions, like holidays and festive events.

"The 60th anniversary of the country is a big moment for all Chinese people. So to ensure a safe and joyful celebration is the top priority for the country's security forces. It is also universal practice to reinforce efforts for public security ahead of sensitive moments. "

He says last year's Olympic Games provided valuable experience in this area.

Meanwhile, Beijing police plan to make bus patrols regular procedure after the campaign in light of the increasing capacity of the city's public transportation system. Wu Mian again.
"Police patrol will gradually become regular on buses after being improved with experiences drawn from this campaign. Plus we sincerely ask each member of the bus crew to help us safeguard security on buses."
