CRI听力: Sino-US Cooperation Needed to Solve Global Challenges

2009-11-18来源:和谐英语
The largely anticipated meeting between the Chinese and US presidents has touched upon some of the pertinent issues such as climate change, economic recovery, and regional security.
Larry Chen describes how the U.S. and China are working together to solve global issues.

China's growing stature in the world is allowing the country to have a louder voice in the international community.

Professor Shen Dingli of the Center of American Studies in the Shanghai-based Fudan University says the key point of President Obama's visit is to create better understanding between the two countries.(www.hxen.net)

"The key point is strengthening confidence. That China needs to trust the U.S. system and the U.S. needs to trust China; understanding China, appreciating China, and strengthening China-U.S. cooperation."

Building and deepening bilateral strategic trust was one of the key issues in the China-U.S. Joint Statement released on Tuesday. The two countries promised to work together to "tackle challenges and promote world peace, security, and prosperity." Specifically, China reiterated that it will pursue a "win-win" strategy for development while the United States stated that it welcomes China to play a greater role in world affairs.

The joint statement also identified regional security as an issue that both countries will further cooperate on. The two countries emphasized the importance of continuing the six-party talks and the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

Moreover, both the United States and China say they will continue to pursue negotiations with Iran in regard to its nuclear program and strengthen communication and cooperation in dealing with terrorism and instability in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Yang Mingjie, a researcher for the China Institute of Contemporary International Relations, says the Joint Statement will provide a guidance for China and the United States to stabilize the region.

"China and the United States share common interests and responsibilities in order to attain global and regional security. They are pushing for the establishment of regional multilateral mechanisms. In fact, the consensus reached by the two sides will serve as a roadmap to address regional and global security issues on the following four aspects: security on a regional level, hotspot issues between the two nations, pushing for international noNPRoliferation regime, and UN peacekeeping missions."

Experts say the pressure is on both nations to make sure that both sides are winners and benefactors of the growing bilateral relations.
