Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said on Sunday that the Shanghai World Expo will be a diplomacy priority for the year. Yang made the remarks on the sidelines of the annual meeting of the National People's Congress, China's top legislature. Tingting has the details.

Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said on Sunday that the Shanghai World Expo will be a diplomacy priority for the year, as 190-plus countries and more than 50 international organizations have registered to participate in the exposition, and millions of people from across the world and nearly 100 foreign leaders are expected to visit the city.

"The World Expo will not only be an international event in the economic, social, scientific, technological and cultural fields, but also in the diplomatic arena."

Yang said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its overseas diplomatic missions have been working closely with Shanghai authorities in helping promote the World Expo and have established a strong team for the event.

Therefore, he is confident of a successful World Expo.

Meanwhile, Yang said the year 2010 is a very important year for China to continue tackling the international financial crisis and promoting the recovery of the world economy.

"We'll safeguard the sovereignty and national interest and be very active in carrying out all-around diplomacy."

The Chinese Foreign minister says that both opportunities and challenges lay ahead for China in 2010. As China's influence grows with its economy and all-around power, both China and the international community should adjust themselves to the change. And China will shoulder more responsibility in safeguarding the stability and development or the international community this year.
