CRI听力: Brown Urges Enhanced International Cooperation in Make-or-Break Year

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown is urging governments around the world to strengthen cooperation in implementing international agreements. He calls 2010 a make-or-break year in tackling a number of global challenges. Our London correspondent Tu Yun reports.
It's been almost a year since the London G20 summit, during which world leaders announced ambitious plans to stimulate a recovery from the global financial crisis.
Speaking ahead of the G20 and G8 summits scheduled in Canada and South Korea, the British Prime Minister says it's time to deliver on those commitments.
"Now is the time to take the next steps to complete the task of rebuilding the global economy and to strengthen the international financial supervision in the coming months. We must now show a fresh and urgent collective commitment to fully implement the G20 framework for strong, balanced and sustainable growth."
Brown has listed five great global challenges of the time, including economic recovery, climate change, and stemming nuclear proliferation.
He stressed that Europe can only secure an economic recovery through cooperation with other parts of the world.
"It's in everybody's interests that Europe grows faster. So we've got to look at how each of us can contribute to that. And it's our common interest for Europe to work with the rest of the world, particularly in relation to Asia, to see how we could remove what are clear barriers to growth that exist at the moment."
On climate change, Brown notes there is a need for "fast start" finance for developing countries to deliver commitments made at the Copenhagen meeting last December. He says London will host the first meeting of the Climate Finance Group at the end of this month to further push forward discussions on the issue.
On nuclear non-proliferation, Brown said Britain will invite the international nuclear watchdog to inspect a UK nuclear processing site.(www.hXen.com)
"We are joining President Obama to secure all fissile material across the globe over the next four years. In line with this we will invite the International Atomic Energy Authority to carry out a security inspection at Sellafield and we will make funds available for similar inspections in areas of greatest concern."
Brown added that Britain is also launching a Nuclear Center of Excellence so that his country can lead global efforts to secure the safe global expansion of civil nuclear power.
