Born in 1954, Leung Chun-Ying, is the son of a police officer. He went to Britain to study in 1974 and returned to Hong Kong as a surveyor in 1977.

In the 1980s, Leung was appointed a member of the Basic Law Consultative Committee. After the handover of Hong Kong, he was appointed convenor of the Non-Official Members of the Executive Council.

At Sunday's press conference, Leung Chun-ying emphasized that Hong Kong did not need big changes. Instead, he said he would introduce change while maintaining stability. He pledged that after he took office, together with his political team and public servants, he would set a good example and run an honest and clean government. He also promised that he would conduct broad consultations on measures to tackle deep-rooted problems such as the uneven distribution of income, inflation, housing, medical services and education.

As part of his election platform, Leung Chun-ying pledged to build more public housing, offer a free 15-year education for all and increase medical expenditures.

Many Hong Kong residents expressed their expectations for the newly elected chief executive and his policies.

"I'm happy to see that he won the election, because he can introduce some new policies. It would be great if he could find some talented people in Finance to help him."

"I hope he can improve people's livelihoods; for example, introduce more medical welfare."

"I hope he can lower the price of housing and extend the duration of free education for our children."

Leung Chun-ying will officially take office on July 1st.
