CRI听力:World Leaders Pledge to Fight against Nuclear Terrorism
In the final communiqué formulated following the two-day Nuclear Security Summit in Seoul, world leaders have stated that nuclear terrorism is one of the most challenging threats to the international community.
The communiqué largely restates the goals declared two years ago at the inaugural summit in Washington.
The specific measures mentioned in the communiqué include protecting nuclear materials and facilities, as well as preventing the trafficking of such materials.
South Korean President Lee Myung-bak speaks out on the issue,
"We need to establish complete international cooperation in order to minimize the proliferation of highly enriched uranium and plutonium as well as to detect, trace and respond to illegal transactions involving nuclear materials. Furthermore, there should be significant progress in establishing international norms."
Chinese president Hu Jintao calls on the international community to respect the UN charter regarding the protection of nuclear materials.
"We must eliminate the source of nuclear proliferation and nuclear terrorism; pursue the goals and principles of the U.N. Charter; adhere to the new security concept which emphasizes mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality and cooperation; continue using peaceful means to resolve hot issues and international disputes and create a favorable international environment for strengthening nuclear security."
The UN Convention for the Physical Protection of Nuclear Materials, or the CPPNM, is the only legally binding convention related to the physical protection of nuclear materials.
US president Barack Obama says nuclear materials remain vulnerable in front of what he describes as bad actors.
"Of course what is also undeniable is that the threat remains. There are still too many bad actors in search of these dangerous materials and these dangerous materials are still vulnerable in too many places."
The next nuclear summit is set to be held in the Netherlands.
