CRI听力:London Olympic Torch Relay Hiccup as Flame Goes out

2012-05-22来源:CRI

The Olympic torch has reportedly stayed alight throughout varied extreme weather conditions in a German testing center, where the wind with speeds of up to 280 kilometers per hour, stronger than that generated in most hurricanes, had been created.

But the torch fails to stand the test of the wind in southwest England.

On the third day of the relay in Britain, the torch went out shortly after it was attached to the side of para-badminton athlete David Follett's wheelchair during his relay in Devon.

A spokeswoman for LOCOG says the flame went out due to a malfunctioning burner. And a replacement torch was brought out from the convoy of vehicles and was lit from the mother flame kept in the specially designed miners' lanterns.

This is the first time the Olympic torch has blown out and the second unusual situation that occurred since its arrival in the UK to begin the 8000-mile journey.

The mechanics that operate the flame burner in the torch is reportedly manufactured in Birmingham, and the torch itself is being manufactured in Coventry.

On the first day of the relay, security guards on the Olympic torch route tackled a man who was considered trying to gain access to a torch bearer around the starting point Land's End.
