CRI听力:China Faces Challenges in Electronics Industry

2012-07-11来源:CRI

From January to May this year, the output of the electronics manufacturing industry has grown by 13 percent in scale compared with the same time last year, and the sales volume has jumped by a total of 11 percent. China has become the world's largest consumer electronics manufacturer and market.

However, the prosperity cannot hide growing problems. For example, the export volume of electronic products during the first five months this year was 24 billion US dollars, with the growth rate dropping by 20 percent compared to the same time last year.

China Faces Challenges in Electronics Industry

The sluggish demand from Europe and the United States has greatly affected the export volume. Liu Yongqiang from the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Machinery and Electronic Products says the profit margin has shrunk sharply.

"The negative expectations in the world's economic situation have caused sharp ups and downs on raw material prices. No one can precisely predict the economic situation trend, so none of the manufacturers in China dare take long term orders. They only produce based on smaller orders."

At the same time, market insiders also point out that the Chinese brand electronics products are not competitive in the overseas market. President Zhou Houjian from Hisense, a Chinese electronic manufacturer says they need to learn how to promote Chinese brands globally.

"Apple is very impressive to me. They usually try all kind of ways to promote themselves before they release a new product. Even when you see some argument or even negative reports about them, from my point of view, it is also a kind of promotion for their brand."

Besides that, lack of innovation in technological development is an obstacle that domestic manufacturers are facing. Take LED TV as an example, China leads the world in manufacturing output, but its core technical parts, display screen and semiconductor chips still rely on imports. The investment in research and development by Chinese companies is still quite limited compared to their overseas counterparts.

Market insiders point out that the Chinese electronics industry is facing a reshuffling in 10 years and many less competitive ones will fold. The lack of core technological development is a major problem that nearly every industry in the country faces.
