The Russian government and UN has called on all warring parties around the world to observe the Olympic truce during the upcoming Winter Olympic Games, scheduled to open Friday.

Preparations are also underway for the upcoming Games in Sochi.

We have more from CRI's Cao Yuwei.

Russian's Foreign Ministry is calling on the international community to build "a peaceful and better world through sport and the Olympic ideal."

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon also calls for observance of the truce when giving a keynote speech at the 126th general assembly of the International Olympic Committee in Sochi.

"I hope that these Olympics will be the venue where all the people will really be able to enjoy the harmony and friendship and mutual respect and compete in the spirit of the Olympic movement. That's what the Russian government is committed to so and that's what I am assured by President Putin."

The top UN official is also due to attend the opening ceremony.

Meanwhile Russian security forces are continuing to operate on high alert ahead of the start of the Games.

Despite this, athletes inside the Olympic village say they are more focused on the upcoming Games.

"For us as athletes it is easier than it used to be here because we can go straight from the village to the Sanki Centre and actually it is no problem and I feel very safe as an athlete and yeah, there is nothing to feel."

"Me quite the same, I don't really care or listen to this stuff outside. I just focus on my race and try not to focus on that so, yeah, that's all."

The official Olympic medals have arrived in Sochi. More than 1200 medals are designed in metal and glass.

3,500 athletes will compete for the Sochi 2014 Olympic and Paralympics medals.

The Olympic torch has also arrived at Sochi, as it's nearing the end of its 123-day journey across Russia.

The torch will travel through the city before the Opening Ceremony.

The Chinese delegation has its sights set on two or three gold medals, even though the squad is without star skater and four-time Olympic champion Wang Meng, who has been forced to miss the Games because of injury.

Chinese figure skater Tong Jian, who won silver in the pair's competition in Vancouver, has been selected as the flag bearer for the Chinese delegation at the Olympic opening ceremony.
The Winter Games run through February 23.
