CRI听力:Israel-Gaza Conflicts Continue as Truce Collapses

2014-08-03来源:CRI

Less than three hours after a 72-hour humanitarian ceasefire between Israel and the Gaza Strip took into effect at 8 a.m. on Friday, constant shelling can be heard from Kerem Shalom area bordering Gaza.

Ilan Regev is the manager of Kibbutz Kerem Shalom.

"We heard a lot of machine guns, and planes in the sky, and red alert and we run again to the safe place. But we are used to the rockets. The main problem is the tunnels, because you don't know exactly what to expect. And even you got an alert, sometimes it takes 3 or 4 hours until you know what's going on outside your door. This is very pressing. It's not so easy."

For people in Gaza, the failure of the ceasefire is even more disappointing.

Adnan Abu Hasna is with the UN's Relief and Works Agency in Gaza.

"The whole population here in Gaza are keen for a ceasefire to last a very long time, because they will need tens of years to recover from what have been done.

People are very disappointed, very desperate. They are afraid of the future.

They wished that this 72 hour ceasefire will be expanded to more time, but unfortunately it did not last for just one hour or one and a half hours."

Moreover, the resumption of hostilities has made it difficult to do the rescue work. Cecilia Goin, a spokesperson of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Gaza, says as the continuous fighting causes more injuries and deaths, it will be more difficult for the rescue teams.

"We thought that today, with the three-day ceasefire, it's a perfect opportunity to see the wounded, take them to the hospitals, but unfortunately this is not taking place. Now the hostilities have resumed, so the situation continues to be critical, the security situation is quite critical as well. And then we cannot do our humanitarian work, which is unacceptable on one hand and it's quite frustrating on the other hand as well."

Israeli forces widened their assault across Gaza on Friday, killing more than 100 Palestinians. The deaths bring the total in Israel's assault to more than 1,500 as well as nearly 9,000 injured.

The expansion of the invasion came after Israel said a soldier is feared kidnapped and two others were killed during a tunnel attack at 9:30 a.m..

Israel Defense Forces spokesman Peter Lerner condemns that Hamas is behind the incident.

"Absolutely this organization just took advantage of the humanitarian ceasefire that Israel had agreed to carry out and indeed implemented for that full 90 minutes. But they came out of the ground, a suicide bomber blew himself up, killing two soldiers, and within the gunfire there, they went back down in the hole and abducted one of our boys."

Hamas confirmed that their forces had carried out the attack one hour before the ceasefire, but denied the abduction of a soldier, saying that Israel had fabricated the claim.

Both US Secretary of State John Kerry and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon have condemned the violation of the ceasefire and urged immediate release of the soldier.
