CRI听力:Nigeria Confirms Sixth Ebola Death

2014-08-29来源:CRI

Nigeria has confirmed its first Ebola death outside the capital Lagos.

A doctor has died in the oil hub of Port Harcourt after treating an Ebola patient.

It is the sixth death in Nigeria, Africa's most populous country.

The latest development comes after the World Health Organization said all countries should be prepared for the Ebola outbreak.

The agency expects it will likely get worse in the coming months.

Nyka Alexander, spokesperson for the WHO's Outbreak Coordination Center in Guinea made the comment as over 14-hundred people have been killed by the virus.

"WHO basically talks about the countries who are affected by Ebola now and the countries who might be affected. Of course the countries that are bordering the affected countries are more likely to have people moving across. So they have to be extra aware. But the WHO has asked all countries in the world to be prepared in case they should see a case of Ebola."

Alexander says that it can take up to six to nine more months to bring an outbreak under control.

WHO has announced a 100 million U.S. dollar plan in an attempt to contain the virus.

So far, Liberia has been hardest-hit of the affected countries, with 624 deaths.

Meanwhile, in east Africa, the Democratic Republic of Congo has confirmed six cases.

The UN has announced a plan to allocate three million U.S. dollars to the country to fight the virus.

Health ministers from across West Africa are expected to meet in Ghana later today to discuss the growing crisis.
