In Hong Kong, the city has for the first time held an official ceremony commemorating the victory of the Chinese people's war of resistance against Japanese aggression.

CRI's Hong Kong correspondent Li Jing has the story.

Hong Kong Commemorates 69th Anniversary of WWII Victory

Hong Kong Chief Executive CY Leung and representatives from veteran's groups have attended the ceremony marking the 69th anniversary of China's victory over Japan.

The ceremony included singing of the national anthem, a gun salute, a moment of silence, and the laying of a wreath in honour of those who fought and died.

Starting from this year, Hong Kong's government will organize activities on December 13th to commemorate the victims of the Nanjing Massacre and those who were killed during the Japanese invasion.

This follows the decision from the National People's Congress Standing Committee earlier this year to designate September 3rd and December 13th as national memorial days.

During the Second World War, the Japanese army occupied Hong Kong for 3 years and 8 months, starting in 1941, during which time the people of Hong Kong constantly fought against Japanese imperial rule.

The Hong Kong government will continue to hold a ceremony during Chongyang festival, which falls on October 2nd this year, commemorating those who died in the defense of Hong Kong.
