CRI听力:Ten Key Arab Countries Back US Strategy on IS

2014-09-12来源:CRI

Ten key Arab allies of the United States have agreed to do their share to fight against the Islamic State group.

The announcement comes after a meeting between US Secretary of State John Kerry and his regional counterparts in Saudi Arabia.

"Arab nations play a critical role in that coalition, the leading role really, across all lines of effort - military support, humanitarian aid, our work to stop the flow of illegal funds and foreign fighters which ISIL requires in order to thrive, and certainly the effort to repudiate once and for all the dangerous, the offensive, the insulting distortion of Islam that ISIL propaganda attempts to spread throughout the region and the world."

Ten Arab countries including Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Jordan promise to take action to stop the flow of IS fighters and funding.

They also agreed to boost support for the new Iraqi government as it tries to unite its citizens in the fight against the militants.

NATO member Turkey has refused to join is Arab neighbors in the pledge.

Earlier, U.S President Barack Obama outlined the U.S. strategy in combating IS including conducting airstrikes against the militants in Syria as well as in Iraq.

Russia has warned that such action in Syria, without the backing for the UN, would be a gross violation of international law.

China responds cautiously to the plan, saying China is ready to work with the international community in the fight against terror but the sovereignty of countries must be respected.

Syria has offered to assist the international community, but only if the efforts are coordinated with the administration in Damascus.
