Billy Horschel has outshined world number one Rory McIlroy to win the biggest title of his career at the Tour Championship, along with the FedEx honours and an eye-popping 10 million dollars bonus.

Earlier on Saturday, McIlroy had tied Horschel for the lead after the third round of the Tour Championship.

Horschel held his nerve to triumph by three shots, clinching his third career victory on the US circuit and second in two weeks.

The American, Horschel, won the BMW Championship six days ago.

Northern Irishman McIlroy already enjoyed a superb 2014 campaign, clinching two major titles among four wins worldwide.

McIlroy held much confidence as he chased what would have been his first FedEx Cup crown.

"It gives me a lot of confidence knowing that even when my golf game isn't feeling 100%, I can still tee it up and get it around and grind a score out. I'm really pleased with these last few weeks, I've definitely haven't played, you know, the sort of golf that I've played over the couple of months in the summer but I'm still able to get myself up to the top of the leaderboard and you can only take confidence from that."

Eventually, Horschel signed off with a two-under-par 68 for an 11-under total of 269 to conclude the game.

McIlroy tied for second with American Jim Furyk.
