CRI听力:ESA Announces Rosetta Landing Site on Coet 67P
The European Space Agency has announced the spot where it will attempt the first-ever landing on a comet.
The Rosetta probe is scheduled to drop its 100 kilogram robotic lander onto the surface of comet 67P in November.
Researchers hope the comet will offer clues about what the world looked like when the solar system was born.
Fred Jansen is the Manager of the Rosetta mission.
"Well, what we hope to find is an understanding of the early solar system, and in particular, what brought Earth, and components of what eventually would be life to Earth."
Space agency officials estimate the chance of a successful landing at between 70 and 75 percent.
Scientists have cited the distance of the comet and its uneven surface as major obstacles.
Rosetta has been tracking the comet since the craft was launched in 2004.
