CRI听力:Afghanistan Names New President

2014-09-22来源:CRI

The Afghan election commission has named Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai as the country's next president.

The announcement comes after Ahmadzai, the former finance minister, signed a deal to share power with his opponent.

Under the deal, Ahmadzai becomes president while runner-up Abdullah Abdullah becomes chief executive, a newly-created position designed to end the political impasse.

The two will share control over who leads key institutions such as the army and other executive decisions.

The development follows three-months of disputes over the country's presidential runoff in June.

Both sides have accused the other of fraud after the runoff vote.

Faizullah Zaki is the spokesman for the incoming president Ahmadzai.

"With the implementation of this document and establishment of a national unity government, Afghanistan will enter a new historical chapter in which the political figures will act collectively to serve the people."

The full results of the election are to be provided at a later date.

An inauguration ceremony is expected within days.

The new administration now faces huge challenges in fighting an emboldened Taliban-led insurgency.

The new president is also expected to sign a security deal with the US which allows a small force of US soldiers to remain in the country after 2014 to provide training.
