CRI听力:Security Council Calls for Concerted Efforts to Fight IS

2014-09-22来源:CRI

The UN Security Council has urged the international community to make concerted efforts to fend off the threat of terrorism in Iraq and other places at a ministerial meeting.

The council adopted a statement condemning the Islamic State jihadists in Iraq and expressing support for the new Iraqi government of Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi.

The council meeting was presided over by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, whose country holds the rotating presidency of the Council for September.

The United States is leading efforts to build an international coalition to fight the Islamic State extremists and have conducted airstrikes against the group in Iraq.

China's permanent representative to the UN Liu Jieyi warns that an international response to the threat of terrorism should not violate the sovereignty of relevant countries.

"The international community should carry out anti-terrorism actions on the basis of respecting the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the countries concerned and abide by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and basic norms of international relations."

The Islamic State extremists control large parts of Iraq and Syria after a lightening bloody advance earlier this year.

It released videos showing horrific beheadings of two Western journalists and an aid worker in recent weeks.
