CRI听力:China Sends Peacekeeping Infantry Battalion to S. Sudan
China is sending 700 troops to South Sudan for a United Nations peacekeeping mission.
The Chinese Defense Ministry says the troops will assume the task of protecting civilians, UN and humanitarian staff, and will conduct patrolling and guarding missions.
They will be equipped with light weapons, armored infantry carriers, bulletproof uniforms, and helmets.
Reports say this is the first time that China has sent an infantry battalion abroad in a peacekeeping mission, though the exact timing and area for the deployment is yet to be decided.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying.
"Considering recent developments in South Sudan, the UN Security Council has passed a resolution to expand its peacekeeping mission in the country. Under the resolution, Chinese peacekeepers will be assisting in safeguarding peace and security in South Sudan, protecting civilians, and supporting the humanitarian efforts. China is in consultations with the UN to prepare for the deployment of the troops."
Currently, the UN is engaged in 9 peacekeeping missions across Africa. China is participating in 7 of them.
