CRI听力:China, US Vow to Overcome Mistrust, Manage Differences

2014-10-20来源:CRI

In his meeting with Kerry, Yang Jiechi said that China and the U.S. should strengthen strategic communication, enhance strategic trust, deepen cooperation and properly handle differences.

"I think the Asia Pacific region is a very important region. We need to work together to build up even more cooperation between China and the United States in the area because this is the area which has experienced robust economic development, and I'm sure that the APEC meeting will go further to bring about more connectivity, innovative development, and to shape a greater future for the region."

Observers say vying for strategic interest in the Asia-Pacific region in recent years has complicated and, sometimes, undermined Sino-US relations.

Beijing and Washington have recently clashed over matters including territorial disputes between China and its neighbors in the South China Sea.

But Kerry said that the bilateral relationship is mature enough to discuss disagreements while building on areas of shared interest.

He noted that China and US have been working together on a wide range of issues, a testament to their strong and indispensable ties.

"There are many issues that China and the United States are cooperating on, even as we have some differences that we try to manage effectively. But right now particularly on Ebola, on Afghanistan, on the Democratic Republic of Korea - the North Korean nuclear situation - on Iran, particularly, and on ISIL and counterterrorism, and on climate change."

Yang Jiechi agreed with Kerry, noting that President Xi Jinping and President Barack Obama have made improving relations a priority.

Yang, also a former Chinese Foreign Minister, said his current US visit aims to pave the ground for President Obama's visit to China in November.

Obama will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping and attend the APEC informal leadership meeting in Beijing.

Yang added that China is willing to work with the U.S. side to make sure the upcoming summit between the two leaders will achieve positive results.
