Army in Burkina Faso Seizes Power after Violent Protest against President

There's been a military coup in the West African country of Burkina Faso.

The country's armed forces have announced the dissolution of parliament and the government.

"Given the serious deterioration of the situation, given the state of dysfunction that the institutions of the Republic are in, the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Burkina Faso brings to the attention of the people the following provisions. The National Assembly is dissolved. The government is dissolved. A transitional body will be set up in consultation with all the forces of the nation in order to prepare for the return to normal constitutional order within a period of twelve months at the latest."

This comes amid violent protests connected to attempts by the country's president to extend his 27-year rule.

Blaise Compaore had been pressing the country's parliament to amend the constitution to allow him to run for another term in office.

Compaore originally came into office through a military coup.

His plan to hold on to power has led to mass demonstrations in the capital, Ouagadougou.

Tens of thousands of protesters have stormed the country's parliament, setting it ablaze.

In taking over the government, the military in Burkina Faso has announced plans to create a transitional government within the next year.

The African Union has been expressing "deep concern" about the current situation in the West African country.
