CRI听力:One Dead, 190 Rescued from Burning Italian-flagged Ferry
One man has been confirmed dead and several others injured after an Italian-flagged ferry caught fire off the coast of the Greek island of Corfu on Sunday.
The Italian Navy said 190 of the 478 people on the ferry had evacuated from the ship by late Sunday night. Most were airlifted by helicopter to other merchant vessels sailing nearby.
Nikos Lagadianos is the Greek Merchant Marine spokesman:
"...it has been confirmed by the Italian Centre of Search and Rescue, the RCC Roma, that one dead person has been retrieved, a man that got trapped in the life boat chute of the endangered boat, the Norman Atlantic. The details of the deceased have not been confirmed yet."
The Greek Shipping Minister says the fire now appears to be partly under control and says the ship will be towed to Italy.
The airlifts will continue while the boat is being towed towards port.
Italian and Greek rescue crews have been battling gale-force winds and massive waves as they struggle to evacuate the burning ferry.
The cause of the fire is not known at this time.
